National Tiger Day in India: Sariska’s Roar of Revival

Celebrate International Tiger Day at Sariska as its once-silent forests now echo with tiger roars.
49 majestic individuals, including ST-19’s four newborn cubs, stand as living proof of dedicated tiger conservation day efforts.

A Global Call to Roar: International and National Tiger Day, July 29

International Tiger Day, observed every July 29, was established at the 2010 Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit, where leaders from 13 tiger‑range nations, including India, launched the Tx2 pledge to double wild tiger numbers by 2022. As a key tiger conservation day, it focuses global attention on threats like habitat loss, poaching, and human‑wildlife conflict, while spurring action on habitat protection, wildlife corridors, and eco‑tourism. In India, home to over 70% of the world’s wild tiger population, this day is also recognised as National Tiger Day in India, underscoring the nation’s leadership through Project Tiger, the National Tiger Conservation Authority, and a network of 58 reserves. Notably, Sariska Tiger Reserve recently made headlines when tigress ST‑30—relocated from Ranthambore in 2023—was observed with her first litter of three healthy cubs, a heartening testament to successful reintroduction and habitat restoration.

National Tiger Day in India: A Majestic Declaration

India, custodian of over 70% of the world’s wild tigers, transforms July 29 into a deeply resonant national celebration. On National Tiger Day in India, the nation honours its monumental strides in tiger protection under Project Tiger, launched in 1973, and guided by the National Tiger Conservation Authority. What began with just a handful of reserves in the 1970s has blossomed into a network of 58 tiger reserves, including Sariska, each one standing as a beacon of habitat renewal and hope.

This tiger conservation day echoes like the deep rumble of a tiger’s roar through forests once silent, now vibrant with renewed life. It’s the story of saplings maturing into canopies, prey species rebounding, and forest corridors reconnecting. Every camera-trap photograph, every patrol route, and every community-led conservation effort becomes a verse in this living epic, a stirring testament that India’s soul still beats in rhythm with its magnificent striped monarch and the wild realms it calls home.

Sariska Tiger Reserve: Echoes of Silence, Roars of Resilience

Sariska Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan is a remarkable example of conservation. After poaching decimated the tiger population in the early 2000s, reintroduction efforts began in 2008–09 with tigers from Ranthambore. Key milestones include the birth of cubs in 2012, a population of 18 in 2018, over 20 in 2020, and 49 by June 2025, following the birth of four cubs to Tigress ST-19. Sariska's resurgence is more than just numbers—it's a story of resilience and restored ecosystems, making National Tiger Day a true celebration of collective action and hope.

Strategic Conservation: The Sariska Success Story

Sariska's recovery reflects the essential principles of tiger conservation, built on four main strategies:

  • Monitoring: GPS patrols, camera traps, and radio collars provide real-time data to enable targeted protection.
  • Habitat Restoration: Reforestation, waterhole creation, relocation, and road modifications have helped revive ecosystems.
  • Anti-Poaching: Strong enforcement and community awareness have made Sariska a low-threat zone.
  • Community Participation: Locals contribute to monitoring, forest care, and awareness campaigns.

These four pillars—community, habitat, protection, and monitoring—demonstrate how research and collaboration sustain the spirit of National Tiger Day in India throughout the year.

How to Celebrate July 29 at Sariska

Sariska provides a unique combination of safari adventure and conservation education, particularly around International and National Tiger Days. Here's how to make the best of it:

1. Plan Ahead: July experiences increased demand. Safaris (October-March) are offered through Utsav Camp Sariska, with fixed Tehla Gate hours and no safaris on Wednesdays.

2. Stay at Utsav Camp Sariska: This eco-friendly camp, located 7 kilometres from Tehla Gate, offers our latest duplex room category, the Forest Villa, designed for a luxurious stay amidst nature, woodland cottages, and a wildlife-first approach.

3. Choose Jeep Safaris: Jeep safaris through the Tehla Gate are a better option than a canter since they are quieter and more immersive.

4. Attend Awareness Events: On July 29, join ranger discussions, guided walks, and conservation evenings.
