Rajmata of Sariska: The Legacy of ST-2 and the Tiger Reintroduction Program, Sariska
Sariska Tiger Reserve, nestled in the Aravalli hills of Rajasthan, is more than just a wildlife sanctuary—it's a symbol of hope and revival in the world of tiger conservation. One of its most iconic figures, Tigress ST-2, fondly known as the Rajmata of Sariska, played a pivotal role in rewriting the fate of this once-silent forest. Her story is of survival, legacy, strength, and a remarkable conservation journey.
Rajmata of Sariska: The Legacy of Tigress ST-2
In 2004, tragedy struck Sariska when all its tigers were declared extinct due to unchecked poaching. The loss sparked outrage and action, leading to India’s first-ever tiger relocation project. Among the pioneering tigers from Ranthambore were ST-1 and ST-2, strong and graceful tigers who would become a cornerstone in Sariska’s rebirth. ST-2 adapted swiftly to her new surroundings and became the first tigress to give birth in the reserve after the reintroduction, making her the matriarch of Sariska’s tiger population. Her lineage continues to thrive in the wild, a testament to her resilience and the program's success. In 2024, after years of roaming the forest and raising multiple litters, she passed away at the age of 19 from an age-related illness. Her passing marked the end of a monumental era, but she left behind a powerful conservation legacy.
Tiger Reintroduction Program in India: A Conservation Breakthrough
The success of ST-2 was not an isolated event. It was part of the Tiger Reintroduction Program, a ground-breaking initiative launched in 2008 by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) and the Wildlife Institute of India (WII). The program aimed to restore tiger populations in reserves like Sariska and Panna, where poaching had led to local extinction. Using translocation techniques, adult tigers were moved to these protected areas, equipped with radio collars for monitoring and backed by heightened patrolling and surveillance. India’s scientific and community-led approach has since become a global model for large carnivore conservation, demonstrating how careful planning, technology, and political will can restore ecological balance.
The Tiger Reintroduction Program, Sariska: A Historic Effort
Sariska was the first reserve in India to receive relocated tigers. ST-2 and her counterparts were monitored closely through radio telemetry and camera traps, ensuring their safety and allowing researchers to study their movements and adaptation. The once-silent forest began echoing with roars again. Boasting a population of 40 tigers (As of 2024), Sariska continues to thrive as a secure wildlife reserve. Early pioneers, notably ST-2, played a critical role in this success, as their survival and reproduction highlighted that rewilding tigers was not just an option but a fundamental requirement.
Sampat Wildlife Foundation: Guardians of the Green
Dedicated organisations such as the Sampat Wildlife Foundation also play a vital role in supporting conservation initiatives within Sariska. Focused on sustainability, education, and biodiversity preservation, the foundation plays a key role in ensuring that ecosystems remain healthy and balanced. Working at the ground level with ecological research and public outreach, Sampat strives to conserve Sariska's remarkable biodiversity, ensuring the well-being of all its wildlife, from tigers to the tiniest inhabitants.
